Luca Catalano Gonzaga Winner of the 2009 CARE International for Humanitarian Reportage for his report on child labour in Nepal
Within the framework of the International Photojournalism Festival “Visa pour l’Image” – Perpignan, Luca Catalano Gonzaga will be awarded the 2009 CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage on September 3, 2009 during a projection night for his report on child labour in Nepal.
The coverage by Luca Catalano Gonzaga depicts the hard living conditions of child workers in Nepal. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), more than 2,6 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 worked in Nepal in 2007, which accounts for 40 % of the children. They earn no more than one dollar a day to manufacture and transport between 1,000 and 2,000 bricks, 4kg each.
CARE is strongly committed to the respect of children’s rights, more precisely to the fight against child labor. In several countries, CARE enables children to go back to school which is the case in Togo where young girls are exploited as servants, in Bangladesh where young children are used to work, in Peru where children work in mines or in Morocco where young children work sorting waste at the dump.
The CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage has been organized with the partnership of “Visa pour l’Image” since 1997. The event has been sponsored by sanofi-aventis since 2003, in coordination with a commitment from the company to assist CARE in humanitarian programs in Haiti, Cuba or in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
